The carbon intensity and biodiversity impact of all food provided by College should be substantially reduced. In the immediate term we should reduce or phase out beef and lamb. We should aim to source food from the UK where that reduces negative impacts and support local producers.
Do we know what proportion of college food is beef or lamb? It is likely to be only a small fraction. In any case - grazing livestock are raised mostly on grassland that is unsuitable for cereal or other crops. If the concern is for methane - it has a short lifetime in the atmosphere compared with other greenhouse gases. The preoccupation with beef and lamb is a distraction from more pressing questions of clean energy production.
